ICTCT 2026 – International Cooperation on Theories and Concepts in Traffic Safety

Zagreb, Croatia | 22.-23.10. 2026

Conference Theme: Road Safety in the age of AI: Innovations, challenges, and opportunities

About the Conference

The International Cooperation on Theories and Concepts in Traffic Safety (ICTCT) is an established international conference bringing together researchers, practitioners and policy makers engaged in the scientific study of road traffic safety. ICTCT provides a multidisciplinary forum for the exchange of theories, concepts, methodologies and empirical findings related to traffic safety, with a strong emphasis on human behaviour, crash causation and the evaluation of safety measures. The 2026 edition of ICTCT will be held in Zagreb, Croatia, and will focus on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Road Safety.

Conference Theme

Road Safety in the age of AI: Innovations, challenges, and opportunities

Artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping road safety research and practice through advanced data analysis, modelling and decision-support tools. ICTCT 2026 invites contributions that examine the opportunities, limitations and implications of AI in road safety, including its interaction with human behaviour, policy development and safety evaluation.

Topics of Interest

The ICTCT 2026 topics cover (but are not limited to):

  • artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in road safety analysis
  • system analysis and policy research related to road safety
  • in-depth exploration and causal explanation of crash mechanisms
  • AI-based crash prediction, risk assessment and early warning systems
  • safety aspects of road user behaviour, including social and psychological influences
  • safety of specific groups in traffic, such as cyclists, pedestrians, children or elderly
  • medical, economical, psychological and other consequences of crashes
  • methodological development covering a wide palette of methods such as crash modelling, in-depth investigations, data linkage, self-reporting, surrogate measures of safety, behavioural observations and naturalistic studies, virtual reality, micro-simulations, etc.
  • big data, sensor-based and connected vehicle data for road safety analysis
  • innovative approaches and explorative studies that bring in new theoretical insights or explanatory mechanisms (even if based on smaller datasets)
  • interaction between human road users and AI-driven systems
  • integration of AI with traditional road safety methods and human factors research
  • ethical, legal and societal implications of AI in road safety and traffic management
  • human factors challenges in AI-supported decision-making in traffic safety
  • road safety implications of emerging mobility modes (e-scooters, micromobility, shared mobility etc.)
  • development and evaluation of road traffic safety counter-measures
  • state-of-the-art knowledge summaries and literature reviews.

Types of Contributions

ICTCT 2026 welcomes submissions in the form of:

  • Extended abstracts or full research papers
  • work-in-progress papers
  • methodological or conceptual papers
  • state-of-the-art reviews

Review Criteria

All submissions will undergo a peer-review process. The primary criteria for paper selection are scientific excellence, methodological soundness, originality, and a demonstrable contribution to practical knowledge in the field of road traffic safety.

Important Dates

  • Abstract submission deadline: April 10th 2026
  • Notification of acceptance: June 30th 2026
  • Early bird participation fee: August 31st 2026
  • Regular fee: October 10th 2026
  • Conference dates: October 22st and 23rd 2026

Submission Guidelines

Abstracts and papers should be submitted via the conference submission system – Easychair

Invitation

The ICTCT Organizing Committee warmly invites researchers, practitioners and policy makers from around the world to contribute to ICTCT 2026 and to join the discussion on advancing road safety through artificial intelligence in Zagreb.
